Quilt and OpenAI dots
OpenAI's dots are personal agents that live inside ChatGPT. Quilt and dots are both personal agents. They differ most in where the agent runs.
| Topic | Quilt | OpenAI dots |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A personal AI agent for your mail, messages, calendar and meeting notes. You talk to it as Q. Invite-only. | A personal agent inside ChatGPT with its own cloud computer, which OpenAI calls a dot.12 |
| Where it runs | A Windows desktop app and an iPhone app. Q is on all three of its screens: Q, Inbox and Calendar. How it works | You create it in the ChatGPT desktop app or on desktop web, and it cannot be created on mobile. After that you can message or call it in ChatGPT, including the mobile app, and in Slack or Teams.12 |
| What it connects to | Gmail and Outlook email and calendars, plus Slack and WhatsApp chats, kept together in one Inbox and one Calendar. | Plugins that connect it to more than 4,000 apps. You can connect Slack and your personal email account.12 |
| Where your data is processed and stored | Your calendar, meeting notes and Q's memory are stored on your devices, with an index of your mail. When Hey Q uses a cloud model, the request goes from your device straight to Anthropic, using your own Claude key. Email text never goes to Quilt's own AI. Privacy Max turns off all cloud help, including Hey Q. Exactly what goes where | A dot works on its own cloud computer, and OpenAI says your own computer and its contents stay separate unless you choose to connect it. Access to your local computer is optional and starts turned off. For ChatGPT, OpenAI says content is stored on its systems and its providers' systems in the US and around the world.124 |
| Training on your data | Quilt never trains on your data. During the alpha, Q uses your own Claude key, so Anthropic's terms for API keys apply to requests made with it. Quilt's servers are not in that path. Details | On personal plans, the model improvement setting in ChatGPT data controls decides. For business, enterprise and education workspaces, OpenAI says data is not used for training by default. Human review can still happen in limited cases, such as for safety, even when model improvement is off.34 |
| Acting for you | A cloud model only suggests steps. Q can draft and propose, and cannot send, pay, post or delete. You press send. Inbox changes show a preview, apply when you tap, and can be undone. | Built-in rules decide when a dot acts on its own and when it asks. Custom rules let you allow, require approval for, or block actions. OpenAI says asking for a draft does not authorize sending it.23 |
| Meeting notes | Yes, on Windows. Q listens on your computer and nothing joins the call. It asks before each meeting, and gives you summary, decisions and to-dos afterward. How it works | None of the four OpenAI pages we reviewed mention meeting notes for dots.123 |
| Availability | Invite-only for now, on Windows and iPhone. Free during the alpha. | The first dot is included with ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium at no extra cost. Pro is for adults outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK. Business Premium is available in supported regions. Enterprise can try a beta if an admin turns it on.12 |
Where OpenAI dots fits well
- You already use ChatGPT daily and want an agent that works in the background.
- You want a very large set of plugins, and Slack or Teams as ways to reach it.
- You want detailed rules for when it acts alone and when it asks.
- You prefer to create and manage your agent from a desktop browser or the ChatGPT desktop app. Quilt has no web app and does not run on a Mac yet.
Where Quilt fits well
- You want your agent's memory to live on your own devices.
- You want mail, messages, calendar and meeting notes in one place.
- You want a cloud model to only suggest steps while your device does the work.
What Quilt cannot do yet. It is new, invite-only and runs on Windows and iPhone only, with no Mac, Android or web app. It has no team or shared-inbox features and it connects to fewer outside services than most products on these pages. During the alpha, bring your own Claude key.
